Can I apply with expired photo ID?

Expired photo ID can be accepted provided the document bears a current likeness to you and states your full current name. Accepted photo ID documents are:

  • Passport (UK or International)
  • Photo driving licence (UK or European)
  • European National ID card (must bear a recent likeness to the applicant)

Please note we are not able to accept documents that have been cancelled by the relevant issuing authority.

If the name on the document differs:

  • You will not be able to use the Electronic Photo ID Validation route.
  • You may instead:
    • Use the eVisa Check route if:
      • You are an immigrant with your status recorded online by the UK Home Office.
      • Your eVisa states your current name.
    • OR apply with a referee and provide a document proving the name change.

If the photo on the document no longer bears a current likeness due to significant change in appearance you will not be able to use that document to support your application. Applicants using an expired document from their childhood or adolescence are more likely to encounter this issue, but significant cosmetic alterations or makeup can also cause it.
