MP Bob Walter supports 'No ID, No Sale!' in North Dorset

27 June 2012

On Friday 22 June, Robert Walter MP (North Dorset) visited local retailer The Southern Co-operative at Salisbury Road, Blandford Forum, to show his support for CitizenCard's 'No ID, No Sale!' campaign.

There Bob met with Tom Perry, Student and Charity Manager for CitizenCard, Co-op Store Manager Wayne Fleming, Deputy Manager Amy Booth and Area Operations Manager Stuart Naylor to show his support for the organisation's 'No ID, No Sale!' policy and its adoption in North Dorset by local retailers.

The 'No ID, No Sale!' campaign seeks to ensure that only adults can buy lottery tickets, tobacco and other age-restricted goods.

More than two million CitizenCards have been issued across the UK since the scheme was launched by then Home Office Minister George Howarth in February 1999. The Coalition Government has continued the previous government's policy of supporting the police's endorsement of CitizenCards and other cards bearing the PASS (Proof of Age Standards Scheme) hologram.

Bob thinks that, following the new government’s decision to abolish National ID cards, schemes such as CitizenCard are essential:

I already have 1278 CitizenCard cardholders in my North Dorset constituency, but I would encourage all young adults in North Dorset to obtain a CitizenCard or similar ID that contains the police-endorsed PASS hologram.

Only then can retailers fully implement the 'No ID, No Sale!' policy which allows adults to buy whatever they wish whilst ensuring that children cannot buy alcohol, tobacco and other restricted goods. I am delighted that take up of CitizenCards at the Salisbury Road store has been so positive and pleased to see a responsible retailer actively promoting the 'No ID, No Sale!' campaign.

The Southern Co-operative, who already ask anyone who looks to be under 25 trying to purchase alcohol or tobacco for proof of age, said:

We are fully aware of our legal responsibilities with regard to age restricted products and being a responsible community retailer we offer our younger customers a CitizenCard form which means they can prove their age.

Every week we face attempts by underage individuals to buy alcohol and tobacco. If they cannot present valid ID we refuse the sale.
