What happens if my card has expired or has been lost, stolen or damaged? - Knowledgebase / General - Support Centre

What happens if my card has expired or has been lost, stolen or damaged?

If you apply for a CitizenCard and we issue you with an ID card it remains our legal property. You have the right, as the lawful cardholder, to use the card for the purpose of proving your age and identity.

You must at all times keep the card safe and minimise the possibility of it being lost, stolen or damaged. If your photo ID is mislaid you should endeavour to find it.

If your CitizenCard is lost, stolen, or damaged, then you can obtain a replacement card at a cost of £14. Your replacement card will be issued within 21 working days, but if you need your ID card urgently (within 1-2 working days) the cost is £29.

You can also replace your CitizenCard in the following circumstances:

  • If your card has expired (all CitizenCards printed from 7th January 2021 onwards expire 3 years after issuance).
  • If your name has changed since your previous CitizenCard was issued.
  • If you wish to obtain the 'next' age band card because you have turned 16 or 18. Please note that you can apply for the next age band card in advance only if your birthday falls within the next 3 months. If your birthday is further away, you will not be able to change the age band.

To apply for replacement ID card please go to www.citizencard.com/card-replacement.

If you have legally changed your name since your previous CitizenCard was issued you will need to provide proof of this by uploading a clear photo of any of the following documents with your application for each instance of name change:

  • Change of Name Deed(s) (Deed Poll)
  • Marriage Certificate(s)
  • Court Order(s)
  • Gender Recognition Certificate

If you wish to apply for a replacement CitizenCard via paper, you will need to complete a replacement application form. If you have legally changed your name since your previous CitizenCard was issued you must provide proof of this by enclosing a photocopy of one of the above documents with your application. If you have changed your name on more than one occasion, you will need to provide evidence of each instance of name change.
