How long does the application take?

For a paper or printed application, the process begins when we receive your completed application at our office and is subject to verification checks.

For an online application the process begins once you complete the required steps listed on your online application checklist and is subject to verification checks.

The processing time for the applications is as follows:

  • standard applications cost £18 and can take up to 21 days
  • urgent applications cost £35 and take 1-2 working days
  • standard replacement applications cost £14 and take up to 21 days
  • urgent replacement applications cost £29 and take 1-2 working days

Those who are applying for a CitizenCard for the first time with a referee should be aware that if we are unable to contact their referee at their place of work, it may slow down the application process. Therefore, it's advised not to use someone from their school, college, or university as a referee during academic holidays. Additionally, applicants must complete the application form in full and submit all relevant documentation; failure to do so will also cause delays in processing the application.

Please check the 'Referee / Verification' section for more information about how to get your application verified.
