Clampdown on shop sales

01 August 2013

Trading Standards officers have issued a warning to shopkeepers after snaring two stores selling fireworks and cigarettes to under-age children. Eddies Corner Shop, of Felpham Road, Felpham and Homefare of Chichester Road, Bognor Regis, were both cautioned following a joint Sussex Police and West Sussex Trading Standards operation.

Homefare was also found to be storing fireworks unsafely. Officers are now promising to take action against any store selling products to children.

Lionel Barnard, county council Cabinet member for residents' services, said that the cautions sent out a "strong message".

He added:

They risk their alcohol licence if they sell age-restricted products to children. Businesses need to ensure staff check people.

Anyone with information about shops illegally selling products should call 0845 404 0506.
