Underage sale shop boss fined

11 June 2012

An off-licence owner whose staff sold tobacco to a girl has been fined.

Manjit Singh, of Khera Off Licence, in Uppingham Road, Leicester, appeared before city magistrates.

He pleaded guilty to an offence under the Children's and Young Persons Act 1993 banning the sale of tobacco to anyone under 18.

A test purchase operation was carried out by trading standards in August, when an assistant at a shop sold a 15 year old girl cigarettes without asking for identification.

Mr Singh was fined £500 and ordered to pay £1,000 costs.

Roman Leszczyszyn, head of business regulation at Lesicester City Council, said:

This case sends a strong reminder to traders about their responsibility.
